A wine not to be ignored
Just as there are different colours in the rainbow that appeal to different individuals, unless one is colour-blind of course, so are individual tastes.
This truism was amply demonstrated in an exercise involving more than 50 guests who were asked to guess 10 Pinotage wines out of 20 already chosen by eminent judges in the Absa Top 10 Pinotage recently.
While I correctly guessed five of the 10 winning wines, the point in the end was not so much about my score as the proof that one’s palate is king (or queen) when it comes to final choice.
Pinotage is distinguishable by several tasting profiles on the nose: herbaceous, banana, toasted (coffee, chocolate), spiciness, woody and tropical flavours.
But if you are unable to smell any of the above, make your own association which will help you to identify the wine whenever you nose a Pinotage. If you smell a bit of plums, prunes or strawberries, so be it. Enjoy it nonetheless.
