She appreciates wine more than umqombothi
WHILE growing up, Praisy Dlamini never imagined she could be celebrated for breaking new ground as one of the few black women to qualify as a winemaker.
Dlamini, who hails from Kwa-Dlangezwa in northern KwaZulu-Natal, says she took an interest in making wine to challenge the myth that people from her province appreciated umqombothi more than wine.
After matric, she enrolled at the Cape Institute for Agricultural Training: Elsenburg, where she received a diploma in viticulture and oenology. It was during this time that she was chosen to join the Wine Guild’s Programme in 2008 to hone her skill as a winemaker.
