The Christmas Quiz
“History is not what you thought – it is what you can remember.” This very wise truism is the central tenet of that timeless classic of English Literature, W.C. Sellar and R. J. Yeatman’s book, ’1066 and All That’.
First published 80 years ago, it is “the only memorable History of England, because all the history you can remember is in this book, which is the result of years of research in golf-clubs, gun-rooms, green-rooms etc”. The book covers such key points in history as ‘Alfred the Cake’, ‘The Pheasants’ Revolt’ and ‘Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armadillo’ interspersed at intervals by quizzes to test your memory to its very depths.
In the spirit of Christmas, and as one in the eye for any wine snobs out there, I should like to suggest a paraphrase to their motto which is ‘Wine is not what you know – it is what you can remember’. Based on dodgy memories, hazy recollections, late-night conversations and a refreshing disregard for any sense whatsoever, I am therefore proud to offer you this Christmas Wine Quiz. And if you can’t make head or tail of it, then you simply need to drink more wine. Cheers.
