Could Chenin Blanc be SA’s next holy grail?
LIKE Pinotage, the next grape believed to have the true potential to showcase South Africa’s prowess as a wine-making nation is Chenin Blanc.
However, it is generally overlooked by consumers who prefer more fashionable varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon, or white blends comprising anything other than Chenin Blanc.
A few restaurateurs I have spoken to bemoan the fact that Chenin Blanc is still a hard-sell and that a varietal which responds so well to South African weather conditions has such a low appeal to local wine buffs.
Yet there are so many credible offerings of single-varietal wines made from the grape.
