Muratie honours their first owner with release of flagship wine
The man, who walked thousands of miles to continue his romance with a slave at the Castle, can finally be laid down next to his beloved Ansela van de Caab. She’s a red blend and Muratie’s other flagship wine.
Historic Muratie Wine Estate, in the premium wine ward of Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, has launched their first flagship white wine, a wooded white blend, the Muratie Laurens Campher 2010.This wine honours Laurens Campher, who started it all when he was granted tenure of the farm, De Driesprong in 1685 – changed to Muratie in 1911. The sense of history is still manifest at the beautifully maintained Muratie estate, where the unique old-world ambience of the farm werf is almost tangible.
The Muratie Laurens Campher 2010 is a blend of 39% Chenin Blanc, 32% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Verdelho and 5% Chardonnay. All cultivars except the Sauvignon Blanc were barrel fermented. 60% of the wine was matured in new French oak barrels and the rest in second-fill barrels. After wild yeast fermentation for three weeks, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, then oak maturation for a further six months.
With intense flavours ranging from honeysuckle to pineapple, the wine’s fresh style is provided by the fine acid/sugar balance. The wine has a sturdy backbone, redolent of the eponymous Laurens Campher. The Laurens Campher 2010 retails nationally at ±R125.
