Cape Town’s Best Burger
When I decided to write this article, I had the grand idea of listing all of Cape Town’s best burgers, analysing them and coming to a conclusion of which is the best. Used in the analysis would’ve been bun to patty ratio, cheese quality, patty consistency and quality and various other tools. I started indulging in the best that Cape Town has on offer, but quickly realised that the sheer diversity of what is available is the biggest obstacle. That, partnered with the subjectivity of the exercise and my inherent laziness, put a stop to any chance of a scientific exercise. Fortunately for you guys I am not someone who gives up easily on a hamburger – as my rather generous body type can attest.
I ate at all the usual suspects for burgers in the city, and a few that are not necessarily on everyone’s radar. What did stand out for me is that the very best hamburgers don’t come from traditional hamburger joints, but rather restaurants specialising in finer dining. What I also discovered is that a good hamburger (to my trained hamburger palate) has a bit of sweetness to it. Not too much, but a hint. I know other burger connoisseurs enjoy the sourness of a good gherkin to compliment the meat and bun but I prefer getting my sour from the tomato on the burger.
