Graham Beck

A taste for fine Franschhoek

A taste for fine Franschhoek

What do Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and I have in common? We have all drunk Graham Beck Brut sparkling wine.

Okay, it’s a bit of a loose assumption, but a fair one – the bubbly was served at both their presidential inaugurations and I’m pretty sure both gentlemen must have had at least a sip to mark such momentous occasions.

I was in Franschhoek this week; it’s ablaze with cerise bougainvillea and luscious purple lavender fields under a turquoise sky. With more than a dozen producers of Méthode Cap Classiques in the valley, it would have been wrong of me not to have visited at least one of them. Graham Beck has one of those über-modern, sharp-edged wine centres and tasting rooms – or so it seems from the outside. It’s softer and warmer inside, and the nice people let you taste for free.
