Wines for Lovers
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to call on cupid and impress your loved one with something pretty special and if you don’t manage to get your sweetheart drunk on love this Valentine’s Day, you can always depend on some fine wine.
Wine is that one romantic gesture that can be sipped, savoured and shared in equal measures and we look at a few pink options for Valentine’s Day.
Graham Beck Brut Rosé
Sparkling wine is a traditional toast to love and the bubbly experts from Graham Beck Wines know just how to seduce the taste-buds with their fruity and fresh Brut Rosé. This bubbly is sure to add sparkle to your lover’s eyes and all you need to do is wait for the fireworks after a bottle or 2. Available at Ultra Liquors at around R89 a bottle.
Buitenverwachting Blanc de Noir Rosé
Pink might be a Valentine cliché, but isn’t that what the day is all about after all? Pink wines taste great by themselves but are even better with food. I tasted this wine at a tasting at Buitenverwachting a while back. They paired it with salmon tartar and strawberries and the combination was absolutely divine! The colour of the wine is salmon pink and on the palate you will find the wine fresh, crisp and the perfect treat for summer. Available at the cellar door at R45 a bottle.
Black Oystercatcher Rose
Elim is fast becoming one of South Africa trendiest wine regions and I stumbled upon this perky pink on a recent visit to the area. It’s candy-floss-like nose will awake your loved ones’ sweeter side. The palate is whoever bone dry with fresh and crisp acidity. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two of the world’s most widely known and most widely planted grape varieties, proof to be a powerful combination and will romance your socks off. The selling price is R64 a bottle, available from the cellar door.
Haut Espoir Rosé 2010
They might be well known for their Gentle Giant red blend but their Rosé is just as delicious and utterly seductive. The aroma of this wine is like a kiss from a rose. On the palate, this upstart blossoms into a bold wine with flavours of strawberry and plum. Pair the Haut Espoir Rosé with a cheese plate with dried fruits or smoked or sautéed salmon. The wine is available at the Haut Espoir cellar door in Franschhoek at R59 a bottle. Sensational value for money, that’s for sure.
