To share or not to share
TO SHARE, or not to share? That is the question that has been posed by popular wine and tapas bar French Toast since it opened just over a year ago.
The concept of tapas is exactly that – ordering several portions to share among friends and family – and one which French Toast has perfected. But it’s not always ideal, for example, a business lunch, which brings together people who are not necessarily that close and intimate that sharing their food is what they want. Then of course, there are those who just want something more, shall we say, substantial on their plates.
French Toast has taken all this into consideration and to meet the diverse needs of its customers has launched a new menu category called, naturally “To Share Or Not To Share”. It expands on the restaurant’s already successful lunch specials which offer daily dishes sized between tapas and main course portions.
The five new dishes are focused on upmarket, classy bistro style food – the best grilled beef fillet served with polenta chips and vine tomatoes; the most exceptional grilled salmon accompanied with pea mash, micro greens and a splash of fresh lime; chicken and Parma ham involtini with roast tomato sauce; the freshest line fish with mash, cucumber and mint salsa, and lemon butter; and a mixed mushroom risotto as a vegetarian option.
Although more formal, these main course portions – affordably priced between R90 and R115 – lend themselves well to lunch as well as dinner, in the same relaxed social setting French Toast has always provided, and offer diners flexibility. Start with some tapas, have some more tapas, or order one of the delicious new dishes – which can also be shared. It’s one more way to get the best dining experience possible, and plays to the skills of the team in the kitchen, all of whom have fine dining restaurant experience.
In conjunction with this menu addition, French Toast has also introduced a weekly wine “Hit List”. With all wines priced at R400 and less being half price on Mondays, the Hit List runs from Tuesdays till Saturdays with a special selection of eight wines – usually four reds and four whites – raided from the cellar, and presented at discounted prices, either by the glass or bottle.
Each week different wines will be featured, and the aim is to encourage guests to steer away from their “usual” and discover something new. It can also make it easier for anyone who might feel a bit intimidated by French Toast’s excellent wine list which runs to more than 100 wines, and find it hard to choose the perfect tipple.
French Toast’s comfortable and cosy décor – dusky brick walls, velvet, deep leather couches and of course the fireplace in winter – is the ideal inner city spot for a gorgeous meal, a quick tapas and glass of wine after work or before the theatre or movies, or even a larger private function. There is no venue hire fee, and it can cater for up to 80 guests at a time, or three smaller parties, with various food and drink options, tailored to suit your budget.
